Press release | Innovative Sports Home Training Program
Kelowna, BC | Okanagan Elite Athlete - the Okanagan's newest sport-specific training movement - is now offering an innovative delivery method for its one-on-one coaching program. Launched at the start of this week, Okanagan Elite Athlete now offers its one-on-one program at the home of their customers - young, amateur athletes.
"In April we launched our one-on-one basketball training program to great success," explains Okanagan Elite Athlete co-founder and UBC Okanagan Heat men's basketball student athlete, Mitch Goodwin. "With summer approaching, we thought this is a great time to launch our at-home program."
Okanagan Elite Athlete's sport specific one-on-one training program is similar to a personal trainer. One of Okanagan Elite Athlete's coaches meets with the young athlete and sets out a training program that focuses on skill development (e.g., for basketball: shooting, passing, dribbling, and position-specific skills) and team play strategies. The athlete then meets on a regular basis with their coach to adjust the training program and add more drills and tricks to the overall training program.
"Summer is the perfect time to develop skills," says Goodwin. "If you talk to any of the college and university coaches in Canada and the United States, they all preach about the importance of developing and working hard in the off-season. There are many sport camps in the Okanagan, and our one-on-one program provides some additional personalized one-on-one coaching to really build on what athletes learn at those summer sport camps. The more we can get athletes practicing and learning the fundaments during the off-season, the more improvement and learning the athlete will see during their season."
Okanagan Elite Athlete decided to offer the at-home service after speaking with parents and coaches. With parents working, and many young athletes not in school, it can be difficult for athletes to get to facilities around the Okanagan to meet with their one-on-one coach.
"Many of our current athletes are middle and secondary school students," says Goodwin. "Between getting to summer camps and programs, vacations, part-time jobs, volunteering, and other summer activities, we wanted to meet the needs of our athletes and their parents by working with the athlete in their own environment. This is part of our core philosophy at Okanagan Elite Athlete. We will meet the individuals needs of each one of our athletes on a personal level."
The third annual Summer Jam Basketball Camp, presented by Okanagan Elite Athlete gets underway the first few weeks of July for those entering grades 7-10. For more information about all of Okanagan Elite Athlete's programs, camps, and services, visit www.okanaganathlete.com or call 250.870.6831.
